We could teach the story that William Clark would tell about his slave York, who during his journey with his owner and Meriwether Lewis became an indispensable part of the team, being treated on par with the white soldiers and being allowed to vote on a key decision.
Clark promised to free York when they got back from the expedition in 1806 but reneged. Clark would complain “He got such a notion about freedom and his emence Services, that I do not expect he will be of much Service to me again”
In 1808 Clark wrote “I have been obliged to whip almost all my people, and they are now beginning to think that it is best to do Better and not Cry hard when I am compelled to use the whip.They have been troublesome but are not all so now” Clark wrote of York that he was “Insolent and Sulky. I gave him a Severe Trouncing the other Day and he has much mended Since”
Clark then rented York out to a harsher master than he was so “he would See the Difference and do better” The man who rented York lived in Louisville near where York’s wife was. Upon his arrival he learned that his wife was taken to Nachez.
Clark freed York in 1816.
Sixteen years after that Clark would tell a story about his old slave York. That since being freed he had moved to Louisville, was unable to prosper, that he hated his freedom and was coming back to his old Master in St. Louis because his life was better as a slave. Sadly York died while traveling in Tennessee of Cholera.
Now… let us ignore that Tennessee is the opposite direction as St.Louis if traveling from Louisville and that York was most likely traveling to Nacthez in search of his wife… but we should tell both sides of that story… how York was happier when he was owned by William Clark… American hero.
