Absolutely, no problem
Come to think of it, if the smokes had been sitting by themselves on a sawhorse or something it wouldn’t have been that big a deal, but he went into my stuff, my tools, my livelihood.
Now just imagine it was some of your tools instead of a smoke.

Exactly, that’s why I kinda lost it.
Which is why “stuff” isn’t created equal and violating someone else’s domain to take their “stuff” is a foolish act.
The op said they were fleeing.
I live out in the backwoods and have always lived on a large section of land deliberately out of sight of the road. Generally that has worked at keeping the riff raff away but not always. Quite a few years ago, when I still had the kids at home, I was out doing stuff on a Saturday morning when my son points at the driveway. I see two young white shirted figures coming our way. Very interesting, since the main gate was shut and locked, it was posted to the hilt with No Trespassing si…
I posted that way back in 2018.
That is how I deal with trespassers. Just the very act of trespassing is an appropriation of private property rights.
If I saw somebody actually after my stuff, I would have zero hesitation in ventilating them.

Hell, if I could I’d bring “Ol Brutus” with me!
That’d sure to cause your neighbors some problems.
Lol shatter every window in the neighborhood.
Neighbors would be HOT.

I think most of us can relate to that.
Same reason I’d have a cow if someone took my electronics.

Not to mention the hole through every house between yours and the outskirts of town.
So, you come home with you spouse after being out and as you enter your house, someone is climbing out a window carrying something of value to you. You’re armed and tell the thief to stop, he ignores you and continues his getaway. Do you shoot or let him go?
This is nothing like what your title suggested.
tnt:Stuff? Let him go. Stuff is stuff. Not worth taking a life or seriously harming someone over.
One of the more mindless hits of 2020.

You shoot, you’re a criminal (too).

Depends on the state. Also, the smart gun owner has Carry Guard or some other insurance.
Are they still in my house?

The people who say that they would shoot usually forget this fact, i.e., saying “to charge a person this would be soft on crime” when that may indeed be a crime in theur jurisdiction.

Legally I wouldn’t be allowed to shoot, so I wouldn’t. If I lived in a state that allowed it, or I lived out in the middle of nowhere, I’d shoot them right in the back.
Much depends on where you live. Several years ago up here in Palmer Alaska (a small town just north of Anchorage) a Preacher who lived next door to his church had experienced several break-ins at the church. So he staked out and waited in the dark for their return.
True to form, they did. When he confronted them, they tried to exit the window where they had come in. He shot one of them before he could get through the window, and the other one as he was running away from the church. Both died. The preacher was indicted for two counts of 2nd degree murder. But the jury of his peers (most of whom were aware of the rash of break-ins these two guys had committed over the previous months) found him not guilty on both counts. Justice was served.
Can’t get’em all, I guess.
Many of our friends here post from the Great State of Texas, where you can blast away at a fleeing burglar. But again, the smart gun owner carries insurance.
