Iāll say that @Sammās assessment of Trumpās character and shtick is right. And (to the DIScredit of some of his supporters) thatās what attracts support. Our culture has turned crass. Our current president participates in that, rather than demonstrating a better level of dignity.
Iām not sure that counts as charisma though.

I believe it comes down to charm versus charisma. Reagan and Obama were charming and pleasant individuals. Obviously, Trump is anything but charming and pleasant. But all three were charismatic. They could attract crowds (Trump still has it) like no other politician of recent memory.

Thatās a toughie. If Trump wasnāt Trump, would he be President today? As abrasive as he is, I honestly believe that if he was mister nice guy he wouldnāt have taken that trip down the escalator.

Might be true. Thatās what I was talking about regarding our crass culture today in an earlier reply. Maybe thatās what it takes today. Maybe thatās why every issue and cause out there needs to come with an in-your-face delivery.
Trump certainly knows how to leverage that.

IMO, if Trump was like Reagan instead of being the crass, falsehood spouting jerk that he is, his popularity would be over 60%, maybe over 70%. Some people apparently like that in a political leader, but most people would rather like the person they vote for.

His policies are the best of my lifetime.
