But we only gonna talk about crime because we get to blame libs and dems for not putting people under the jail. Meanwhile we will ignore three decades of collapsing crime rates in these same cities. We are also going to ignore the fact that crime rates are starting to trend down again.
Got my first radio job 40+ years ago in southern oregon when I was 17…dream was to be the play by play guy for the trailblazers…(sadly the nba has kind of lost me).
Yeah…and I admit I get carried away but I have strong opinions…
I’m sure most of us on this forum are good people…
Suppose I need to start with me remembering that.
(And just remember Gino Smith’s Seahawks had a better year that Wilson’s broncos who saw that coming?)
Anyway that’s as far off topic as we can get…
These things run in cycles….maybe Portland and surrounding areas can find a spot somewhere back toward the center.
Walmart CEO said “a lax approach from prosecutors could impact prices and lead to store closures down the line”.
“It’s really city by city, location by location”.
Portland has prosecutors who are lax on shoplifting prosecutions.
Walmart left Portland.
Some people think they know why.
A search on Google maps shows three in city limits. Two in the middle of SE Portland off highway 84 and one near the I5 Bridge across the Columbia. I expect the two in SE Portland are the ones being closed.
Oh wait … today I see another Supercenter on the northeast side on highway 30. There are also several neighborhood stores that are essentially grocery stores.
And it happens in a remarkably short period of time. Twenty years ago, I loved going to Portland.
The deterioration of Seattle is exactly the same. I rue the fact that both of my daughters are now living in that cesspool … or rather close enough (Kent and Ballard) that they can smell it.
I can only say that K-Mart made a big splash on the west coast. And it was obvious that WalMart targeted them by buying property as close to a K-Mart as possible and edging them out as well as the mom and pop stores in the area. The politicians in those counties made it a big deal to make WalMart the villain.
People on the west coast do want the likes of WalMart. But they have been conditioned to hate them over the years. A lot of folks on the west coast do not realize that the straggly that WalMart used was pretty damn effective.
I grew up in Seattle 40 years ago. Ballard was the down and out boring part of Seattle. Now it’s homes cost a fortune and the neighborhood is packed with fine dining, nightlife, cool bars.
Things change, some for the better, some for worse. I do miss a couple of the dive bars in Ballard that upscaled.
Love Ballard… Scandinavian vibe and a whole strip of cool bars/restaurants around Market street. Not to mention Golden Gardens beach in the summer is so much fun.
“Theft is an issue. It’s higher than what it has historically been,” McMillon told CNBC. Prices “will be higher and/or stores will close,” the executive added if Oregon authorities failed to address rampant shoplifting.
