"From January 2022- January 2023 Portland Police showed over 27,100 reports of larceny (what shoplifting changes to when a person leaves the store) in the city. That averages over 2,000 incidences a month. It seems almost implausible that Walmart would close all of their stores in a major metropolitan area, but when a spokesperson for the company state “multiple factors” go into the decision, most can read between the lines and draw their own conclusion."
What the local news is saying. But our libs know better.
And yet, in the parking lots surrounding just about any new WMart that gets built, you find strip malls of all sorts of shops – and many are mon-and-pop stores. Ditto salons and kiosks inside the Wal Mart building itself.
The same (types of) folks using the same university educations work KMart, Walmart and every retail chain.
They both target high-traffic areas, near interstate exits etc…
They attended the same schools, studied from the same books etc., heck sometimes they even change jobs, from Kmart to Walmart, to Home Depot, Bed Bath and Beyond, to Ford, to McDonalds to Exxon.
Ray Kroc often said he is ot in the hamburger business, he is in the real estate business.
I agree with this. Yes some stores will close but that’s the nature of small business. A Walmart moving in doesn’t necessarily mean tumble weeds throughout the rest of the small business areas.
Just looking at the Walmarts near me not many mom and pop stores. I see Aarons Rentals, Gamestops, Disc Replay, Check cashing and payday loan branches. Though I do see a couple of locally owned restaurants but these seem to change every year or so.
The problem with Walmart’s is the sheer range of items. Traditional small businesses such as hardware, sports, etc struggle when Walmart rolls into town.
Everyone expresses regret at the advent of big box stores but lets be honest we all use them and are therefore part of the problem.
