People who say this are boomers who don’t really understand how social media works. They literally think it’s just taking your common street corner communication and turning it into an app.
That’s street corner is public… built and maintained by the government. Twitter is not. Truth social is not. Facebook is not. They are all privately held.
If they want a true public square they need the government to own it. Problem is, they wouldn’t want to communicate on a government owned social media app. Because they are the deep state.
And when was the last time you saw people congregating in the town square to show off their cute cats doing stupid things? Hell when was the last time we saw an actual town square?
It’s not a perfect analogy to be sure, but I don’t think this
Needs to be true. This instant, worldwide connectivity is new, and requires new thinking. Part of the problem is trying to shoehorn it into mid 20th century models.
You would have to control advertising and marketing of these social networks. This is usually the reason why they don’t allow all speech. What government regulation would do that?

When they finally drop Truth Social look for Trump and his worshippers to scream bloody murder about how he’s getting censored by some secret liberal cabal, or something.
Edit: Right afterwards there’ll be a mass mailing of “Trump needs your help!” letters.
Come to my town, we have a town square, on Friday’s the local street rod community cruises the square with their cars and park. We have a main Courthouse built in the late 1800’s with a wall around it where we can all sit. Across from the Courthouse we have small business in buildings that were built around the same time period.
Our town does quite a bit centered around this area throughout the year.
This growth phase was predicted really accurately.
The second, and most significant, challenge TMTG will face is the inevitable and unrelenting attacks from the extraordinarily wealthy and powerful “Big Tech” oligarchy and its allies. They will attack TMTG from both a business competition standpoint and from a political philosophy standpoint. Specifically, Big Tech may prohibit TMTG from accessing the servers (or tech stack) it will require, they may remove TRUTH Social from App Stores, and they may cut off TMTG’s ability to access and raise money electronically (as they often do through companies such as Stripe, GoFundMe and even Big Banks to some extent, see links for examples), to name just a few.
Looks like TS is ahead of schedule thanks to the Garland Biden raid.
Not many at all but nothing is stopping anyone from trying to create an alternative.
Just because there are minimal options does not mean they have to approve any and every social media app that is submitted. Just like Walmart, target etc is not obligated to accept every item for sale that is submitted to them.
Many smaller towns and communities have that but how many times are politicians using those events to have discourse with the public. Let me guess all your local reps frequent these events for an exchange of ideas……
The argument is that social media has no business in banning individuals for political opinions because they are the new town square. Which is complete bollocks.
even in “town squares” there are rules. I start running around being abusive to people and making a nuisance of myself I am going to be ejected. Talk about rioting and trying to incite individuals the police are going to move me on.
