Trump Right to Commute Blagojevich Sentence

Let us know when it gets stuck.

Saw on the tube last night…An interesting take on it. Comey prosecuted Da’souza. And Fitzpatrick prosecuted Blogo…It would be like Trump to pardon them because of who prosecuted them. He is that vindictive…

He’s in jail for being an idiot. Other politicians would have done the same thing and said “No, there was no quid pro quo.”

Not all of the 17 charges were related to selling the Senate seat.

He also attempted extortion of a childrens hospital.

So you’re saying politicians should all be allowed to get away with what he did?

When you people restate what I said, why is it always not? There’s a difference between getting away with something and spending 18 years in jail.

14 years.

So what sentence should he have received for being found guilty on 17 charges (4 appealed, so eventually 13)?

This was my statement that made you conclude that I thought he should not have been convicted:

“He’s in jail for being an idiot. Other politicians would have done the same thing and said “No, there was no quid pro quo.””

No where in there did I suggest I knew what the proper length of his sentence should be. Go ask one of the jurors or the judge involved.

He’s in jail because he’s a corrupt dirtbag. And he deserves to be. But as long as Trump is pimping for him you guys will say he’s some sort of political prisoner which is laughable and just shows how easily you guys are willing to sell your souls for the Great Orange Hope.

Again, I never said he shouldn’t be in jail or even express an opinion as to whether Trump should have pardoned him. I stated that other politicians have done similar things and gotten away with it with a “no, there was no quid pro quo”
Look up the Marc Rich pardon, if you need an example.
Maybe more should be in jail than that he should not be.

I did not say anything whether or not he should have been convicted, I asked if you thought it was OK for politicians to get away with what he did and not be convicted. Your responses seem to support that viewpoint, or that perhaps you don’t care that they all get away with it.

That is in your interpretation based on your belief of what point I might be making, not inherent in my statement.

No, it’s pretty darn inherent.

The key to them getting away with it is media malfeasance.

That’s what I keep thinking as I read this thread. Can you image if Hillary had won and suggested commuting Blago’s sentence? Fox News and its fans on this site would be going ■■■■■■■■

Only if you believe that “others doing it” justifies everyone doing it. I don’t.
You apparently see that as a valid argument, though.

More static in the background.

Besides…I don’t think Blago would have been able to afford the price Clinton would have extracted from him for that Quid pro quo.

It is an interesting scenario.

Quite the contrary. I think anyone practicing corruption should be investigated and charged if necessary.

IMO, Blago should stay in prison and others should be charged, if doing something illegal.

Not a lot out there on the Blago and Clinton relationship.

I did find this interesting…

  1. A friendly guy who promised the moon and, perhaps by dint of not really doing much of anything, hadn’t really done anything to upset anyone.

And keep in mind: Blagojevich was really, really good at campaigning. The same unflappable demeanor and attraction to the spotlight that seems slightly insane in exile works very well on the stump:

Life could not be better. He loves politics, and he has won every election he has entered-first for the state legislature in 1992, where he stayed until 1997; then when he moved up to the U.S. Congress. Last year, he confounded the pundits by becoming the first Democrat since 1972 to win the governorship. He does seem a natural, with his high-energy style and his gift for connecting with voters, remembering not only their names but also the details of their lives. He denies it, but friends say he intends to run for President in 2008, and they point to his Hollywood jaunt as a way to build his nest egg. Once, riding in a limousine with Bill Clinton, Blagojevich had asked, “What made you think you could win in ‘92 against Bush and all those big names?” The President said he knew that if he “got the politics right,” his opponents would fall by the wayside. Today, Blagojevich acknowledges that Clinton was his model in the gubernatorial race.
