Yeah there is definitley a segment of the population that is unbelievably happy right now.

Read up on civic nationalism.

As I said in the OP, that’s the problem. Trump says ā€œthingsā€, usually stupid things without a proper grasp of context/history behind those words. He typically says these things in front of adoring crowds for praise and to chastise his opponents. Trump’s own ignorance isn’t enough of an excuse.

Here is pretty good definition/example of Civic nationalism.

Liberalism was born in the Enlightenment, but entrenched aristocracies had no desire to give up power to the people for the sake of liberty and equality. However, that wasn’t as true in the British colonies of America, where self-governance was already being practiced. A few years after winning their revolution, the Americans cemented the idea of civic nationalism by writing the United States Constitution . This document created a government not on hereditary lineage or because someone pulled a magic sword from a stone. It was not a government made to represent one ethnic group. It was a government made of the people, by the people, and for the people. This new government recognized citizens of the nation as those who ascribed to these political ideals, and not those who belonged to a singular ethnicity, religion, or class.

You just keep proving my point over and over again. You ignore the other definitions for nationalism as simply pride in ones own country, people, culture and traditions, and you single in the the worst possible definition or context, and then run with it. You basically equate nationalism with fascism, and preclude the existence of any other possible meaning.

Ummm… Europe, especially mid 20th century Europe , is not the USA. Never was. Never will be.

Socialists who were nationalists? I’d happily condemn them- Pol Pot, Stalin and Castro come to mind. Good riddance…

If you are embracing nationalism, you are embracing a long line of dictators on the Left and Right. I prefer a constitutional republic with a series of checks and balances. But call me old fashioned I guess.

I guess it would be easier to try and change the definition of nationalism to something warm and fuzzy like a super patriot…but it really has a pretty clear history.

No, take any and all versions of socialism to the worst possible extreme, like you are doing here with patriotism and nationalism.

Seriously- why not just say you embrace patriotism? Why try and change a word like nationalism to make it warm and fuzzy?

Civic nationalism isn’t bad.

But that isn’t the most prevelant or famous form of nationalism.

When most people think of nationalism they think of the carnage of the world wars, or even the carnage of our own civil war, a nationalist war in its own unique way. They think of the willingness of nations to send entire generations of young men to slaughter for the glory of the fatherland.

Nationalism, in limited doses, can be a good thing. But far to often it spirals out of control.

Because there are other meanings of that word, that do not equate to Hitler’s Nazi Germany version of the word.
