I am a little surprised that the author did not cite the Tea Party movement. For a time it was a fairly large portion of the Republicans nationwide.

As far as that Op-ed… he identifies six parts of the New Right.
The Border Hawks. The Catholics, The anti- identitarians, The Anti -media, The fringe and the torchbearers (the politicians)
Of those only one is policy based. Everything else is either personality or grievance driven culture war stuff.
Let’s rally around that.

The new right does many of the same things, just louder and cruder.
Well, that and they are trying to now use laws, which small government conservatives used to be against, to make people behave the way they want them to behave.
Or to try and get them to behave that way.
That usually doesn’t end well.
