Super Bowl LVIII

Trent Dilfer says hi.

Yup, Dilfer proves it can be done.

Sure it did. And I don’t agree with not taking 3 when you can, but it’s how they got there. And I can’t fault him for doing what got him there, even if it bit him in the ass in the end. Or maybe kinda sort of bit him in the ass in the end had they made the not guaranteed field goal.

He is no Joe Montana for sure (give him a Jerry Rice and a few years though, and he might be,) but I think he is too young to know that he is average. He thinks he can do it, so he can do it. At least so far he has.

Yep. Not making the field goal has the same effect as not making the first down. But the first down has the potential for 7 points, whereas the FG is only 3.

What is the probability of the team gaining 1 yard on downs 1-3? Surly that comes into play when the Coach is deciding whether or not to go for it on the 4th.

Dunno. I’m not a coach, but they pay Dan Campbell a ■■■■ load of money to make decisions. And he got them within sniffing distance of a championship. Better than the last dude.

i heard the other day. typical 3.5hr broadcast of a game contained 18 minutes of actual football. you will see a lot more commercials than football that is for sure.

its one of the reason in tune into the redzone during the regular season.

no commercials.

I’m guilty of watching Payton and Eli commentating. I think it’s better than the network announcers. A little more insightful breakdown of each play, no backstory drama.

I’ve tested this already using condensed games. I’ve timed how long a game was from snap to whistle. Actual playing time is between 11 and 13 minutes. Other than players in motion, the rest of the time they’re just standing around. This is why it always makes me laugh when these guys get out of breath.

I’ve played a lot of sports in my life. Football was the easiest to keep from tiring. Especially organized football. Besides baseball that is.

I agree 100%. It’s so much more relaxing watching their broadcast than listening to those announcers. If I had my choice, I’d watch the games with the two man crew muted. That should be an option.

Dilfer couldn’t do it in today’s game. Either could Brad Johnson. Defenses simply can’t get that good anymore. The closest we got was the 2013 Seahawks. The rules just don’t allow for it.

Purdy is a little better than them. People short change him due to his draft position. He’s no great QB, but he’s a very capable QB. The 49ers drafted Trey Lance really high and he sucked. So it’s not like anyone can do it. I’d say Purdy is in the Garoppolo category. Maybe a little better.

The kid who won it for the eagles is basically Trent dilfer. That’s recent enough.

They don’t do filler. Thats what I like the most about them. A WR drops a pass, “Gotta catch that!” A few sighs and a grimace. Broadcast announcers drone on about the gloves, the turf, wind…they just fill until the next snap and to me it gets annoying.

I like when they break down defense at the snap too. Just seeing it through players eyes. They had Ray Lewis on (yeah, nobody likes Ray) and I enjoyed hearing what he had to say real time from a defensive standpoint. Even though he seemed woefully unprepared to comment, it was still good because it wasn’t scripted and refined, just raw.

Nick Foles? He had a lot of talent. I’d put him over Dilfer.

This annual thread always reads like a foreign language to me. But for some reason this thread makes me happy.

Dont watch the superbowl but i think the Monday after should be a national holiday.

Historically at work the number of call ins would spike but since moving to work at home that is no longer an issue.

He was a backup though but yeah he was def better than dilfer. That’s fair.

This is meant to do nothing but further divide the nation.

There’s no such thing as a Black National Anthem. That would require a black nation.

The only issue with probabilities is they are based on aggregate stats and so the probability becomes your odds of making it against a typical team.

But when you’re in the NFCCG, you’re not facing a typical team…you’re facing a very good to great team that is going to be fired up to stop you.

It is possible Campbell did not have faith in Badgley at that range…we do need to remember Badgely spent most of the year on the practice squad. He had an outlier bad year in 2020…not taking that into account he was 80% recently from 40-49.

But he also kicks in a dome and this was outside.

This is the only slack I will give Campbell is it is quite possible he thought the safer play was actually to go for it because he didn’t trust his kicker from 45 and 48.

The bigger mistake and it’s funny it’s the one not talked about, was running on third and goal at the end of the game. There is no excusing that call because if you are losing late by two scores, you simply cannot call your timeouts while on offense trying to make up the first of two scores.

My take here is Campbell should have kicked the FG to make it a 7 point game after the play where Goff failed in the first and goal pass.

That really was the only way to preserve a decent amount of time and have all three timeouts so if your defense gets a stop, you have one last chance.

To be fair, there are hardly any coaches in the NFL who would do this…I see this mistake all the time when teams are trailing by 10 late…,they expend far too much time and effort trying to get the TD first, rather than kick the FG as soon as they are within 95+% make probability range to save time.

It’s funny…as soon as that Lions’ receiver stepped OOB at the one and a half yard line instead of scoring, I knew the Lions were done because they were so close to a TD they would not settle for a FG.

Now, he didn’t have the stats to back that up. Foles should have went to Arizona, Houston or Tennessee or something. He definitely coulda helped Houston after Schaub, at least until Watson was drafted. Ah well, he gone.
