SARS-like virus spreading rapidly in China; cities quarantined; cases in US

First transmitted person to person case in the US reported today in Illinois.

Can we please just let epidemiology do itā€™s job. Pretty please?

Yes, the US is taking this disease seriously. The State Department has tightened travel warning to China to ā€œLevel 4: Do not travelā€. Confirmed cases are near 10000 and the number of deaths is over 200.

Russia, Mongolia, and North Korea have closed or severely restricted travel across their borders with China.

A question is what happens as the number cases grow in other countries?

Do we continue to expand travel warnings?

Do we restrict travel from countries affected by the virus?

More travel restrictions and mandatory quarantines for people returning from China are already being put in place.

As of this morning weā€™re up to 11 confirmed cases in the US.

Iā€™d say that the CDC, NIH and all of the major airlines are definitely concerned at this point and are beginning to implement sensible policies to keep it from becoming epidemic.

Many of the worldā€™s airlines and govā€™ts are instituting what seem like sensible policies to that end as well.

Still just unwarranted hype and exaggeration, right?

China is finally starting to revise its coronavirus figures based on people who have the clinical symptoms of the disease not just those who have tested positive. There appears to be a chronic shortage of virus tests that created the difference.

Chinese who report on the virus end up ā€œmissingā€:

My observation is that the best source of news appears to be from Hong Kong, such as the South China Morning Post. US media sources tend to simply report news releases from the central government.

The governmentā€™s reaction to the crisis shows the weaknesses in the command and control system. This coronavirus could become an existential threat to the current order.

Hereā€™s hoping. :+1:

China has a long history of underreporting to prevent panic and keep these breakouts from having any significant economic effects gobally.

This one just got away from them completely. I still doubt they are accurately reporting even 20-30% of the actual cases and deaths.

Everything makes sense now.

Nah, youā€™re still confused as all hell, but at least you had a moment of lesser stress just now. Itā€™s good for the heart.

The wife and I bought a Mediterranean Cruise to celebrate retirement scheduled to leave Barcelona the 21st of May with several stops in Italy, Sicily, France and Spain.
If it gets canceled or we get quarantined Iā€™m going to be one pissed off old fart!

Your posts amuse me, thatā€™s for sure. Keep up the good work. :sunglasses:

The desperate plagiarism is very flattering, thanks. :hugs:

I wouldnā€™t blame you but you couldnā€™t pay me to take a cruise.

Theyā€™re fun especially with a bunch of friends. Trick is to stay plenty active or your clothes start getting tight with all the eating and adult beverages!
Truth be told, Iā€™d rather be cruising cross country on the Electra Glide for the 10 days!

Very desperate. Iā€™ve been looking for my purpose in life here.

That sounds rough. Best of luck out there!

The government of China has quarantined Wuhan and 15 other cities. Tell them they are going hysterical over this.

How many have died of the flu this season?

Did America ever follow through and stop any particular forms of travel to/from China?
