But that is dramatically different than a teenager splitting time living with his own biological father, his own biological adult sister, and some of the time with Gaetz over a handful of years. If Gaetz stepped up and allowed this teen to crash at his house on occasion, after his mom died, then we should all applaud that. Nestor seems to be a fine young man. And it takes a village to raise a child at times. Especially a teenager.
But Gaetz claiming what he claimed, when he did, was pure political opportunism in its most vile form, as a means to shut a black man down in a hearing where he was discussing the very real issues that black children face with law enforcement in this country. What Gaetz did in this regard is very much contemptible.
I don’t like him. He is a grandstanding fool who wore a gas mask (incorrectly) on the floor of the House to make fun of people concerned about COVID-19. He is an elitist, spoiled rich kid who had no qualms about breaking the law, because his wealthy father would swoop in and save him. He epitomizes the absolute worst of what modern politicians are today. Someone in it solely for themselves and not for their constituents. What is there to like about this guy? Do you like him?
But I believe I am also being fair in my sentiments here as well, with respect to this given issue.
He pretended to be righteously indignant, interrupting a black man on the committee who was discussing the very real threats that black children face and the discussions parents of black children have to have with their kids about law enforcement. He decided to use this teenage brother of his ex-girlfriend as the cudgel. As a prop to make a point that was in and of itself nonsensical. Nestor is not black. Gaetz does not know what it is like to raise a black child in America. He did not understand what Richmond was saying in this respect.
I praised him for helping out with this kid. That hardly means we should praise him for what he chose to do in using the kid when it best suited him politically.
