No you don’t. The proper process for asylum is to come through a border station and apply there. Wading across the Rio Grande is not the legal way to do it.

There are 50 official border crossings on the Mexican border. They are manned by both US and Mexican officials. Haven’t you ever gone from California to Mexico in a car or on foot?

It’s pretty straightforward logic. The law says that it’s illegal to enter the country except at official ports of entry and also that one seeking asylum must be in the country to apply. Putting those two together and you get: Come into the country legally through a border immigration station (into the sterile zone controlled by the agents on our side of the border) and ask for asylum.

We need to build more detention centers. People are less likely to want to stay in a detention center waiting for their fake asylum claims to be rejected than they are to wait around in a sanctuary state enjoying benefits.
