I grew up in a UAW household. I watched my father go from a staunch UAW supporter to cursing the union for where its leadership was taking it. When I see pictures of a labor negotiation, between Corporate Executives and Union Leadership, all I see is a bunch of suits sitting around a table.
Like any Democracy… leadership is only as good as the people who are voting for them.
A whole bunch of the media is attacking Flynn today. I wonder who tells them to attack.
Big labor has been subverted by political operatives for a long time now. I remember when GM, Ford, Chrysler and AMC were the big 4. Four different companies, with 4 different work forces and yet represented by one union. The union sold itself as representing the rank and file, serving as their advocate in legal contract negotiations. It is well known that these industry wide unions are engaged in getting the same results across the industry. Yet the work force of the different companies are actually in competition with each other. We don’t allow the same legal advocate to represent opposing sides at the same time. The reality is the union seeks to become a staffing company for the industry, rather than an advocate for the work force.
The West Coast part of my Union, IATSE, recently went through contract negotiations that almost ended up in a Strike. It didn’t. A lot of people did not like the agreement that was reached, but not enough to overcome the general membership yes vote.
Since I have joined the Union over ten years ago, my pay has increased year over year, I have good health coverage, and a pension.
My only complaint… and it is most of the complaint about people in my industry is work conditions and long hours.
This past contract fight has gotten more young people to run for the leadership of locals and therefore affect the national leadership.
A democracy is only as good as the people voting in it.
It is actually pretty silly. They are trying to create a narrative without full disclosure. These so called conferences are mass marketing events for a business coaching firm. Flynn and the other speakers are nothing more than the pre-sales pitch entertainment to get folks to attend. Flynn and the others, along with the very name of the conferences, are meant to target a specific audience to get them into a small venue to receive a sales pitch.
Flynn isn’t a government official and all he has is name celebrity. He is basically a sham wow sales guy. But I guess it shows just how broke he is now.
Well the auto workers said the same thing, until AMC went under. Then it kept up until the labor costs became so expensive that something had to give. Manufacturing of components and parts went oversea. My father used to proudly tell me that in the day, raw materials came into one end of the plant complex and a finished car rolled out the other end. The site of those plants are now empty lots. The jobs gone to foreign countries, the equipment scrapped, the buildings torn down and nothing left for the workers who were employed there but bittersweet memories.
