I was thinking about this some and here is how I think the repubs should play this.
Agree to allow Kav to testify first with the condition the full re-decated letter is given to all comittee members in advance. This should be short since details are lacking.
Then let Ford testify.
Then allow Kav an opportunity to testify again if he wants to in order to rebut any testimony Ford gives.
I still think putting Kav first is ridiculous but if you are going to do that he at least needs an opportunity to provide rebuttal testimony as well.
I think that no matter what they do, they are going to look insensitive to her testimony… it is just a matter of the times really.
I think that instead of it all getting hashed out live on TV it would behoove them to actually have an investigation. They have time before the election and they have a lame duck session to get his confirmation through if the ultimate goal is to get him confirmed.
I personally don’t think that there is any more dirt on Kavenaugh other than this unprovable claim… but the GOP is seriously acting like there is another shoe to drop and they want to get this done a quickly as possible.
How about this? When two disagree, bring them into a room together. Where they can look each other in the eye, speak their peace and allow others to listen, observe and discern.
An FBI investigation even if conducted will likely man little. If we go back to Thomas and Hill the FBI did investigate since they had jurisdiction and said hey found nothing. Did that matter? No. Even if the FBI came back and said their investigation was inconclusive (which is the likely outcome) what would that change? nothing. People would still want to hear her testimony like they did Hill. So all we do is push things a week or two down the road then try to schedule testimony and then oh it’s close to the elections no time for all that and then gee there is a new senate coming in let’s wait for them.
This is delay and stall. The GOP is in a bad spot and unfortunately I think the dems are going to win this fight and push this nomination until the next senate. Her demands to testify are unreasonable but if the GOP doesn’t accept them they look like they don’t care. I think Trump will wind up having to pull Kav due to this even if he didn’t do anything and we have round 2 in Jan with the new senate.
Lame duck isn’t an option. As much as this is in the news he’s going to have to either be voted on or withdrawn in the next 2 weeks. He is not going to remain a nomineee until after the election. If he’s withdrawn with elections coming up new guy doesn’t come up until next year.
The only way I see lame duck coming into play is if Kav is withdrawn and dems win senate and then repubs try to push the new nomiee through in the lame duck session.
If dems win senate it will be 2 years of “garland revenge”.
It is ridiculous that supreme court nomiees have come to this. I miss the days of “I don’t agree with them but they are qualified so I’m voting for them” and 90-3 type votes.
With her wanting Kav to testify first I think her memory is going to suddenly improve and honestly I hope it does but Kav needs a chance to respond if that happens and they want to deny him that.
