Exactly. The discussion is whether or not to let the child die naturally (basically a DNR) or to put it on life support.
Northamwas referring to “third-trimester abortions” that are done in cases “where there may be severe deformities. There may be a fetus that’s non viable” he said. “If a mother is in labor, I can tell you exactly what would happen. The infant would be delivered. The infant would be kept comfortable. The infant would be resuscitated if that’s what the mother and the family desired, and then a discussion would ensue between the physicians and the mother,” Northam stated.
It is also worth noting that Northam is an actual doctor with years of pediatric experience prior to entering politics. In fact, as a pediatric neurologist, he quite likely consulted on such cases as described above.
Yet, we are to ignore all of this because of cranks on the internet?
He was asked about 3rd trimester abortions, he then explained why there may be a reason for a 3rd term abortion, using a scenario, where the fetus would not survive if it was born.
Late term abortions are tragic and heart wrenching. All of those scenarios have parents who wanted a child…and then late in the pregnancy, it was determined that their fetus is horribly deformed, and would not live outside the womb. Read some actual accounts from the women who had to go through this nightmare.
Of course, it does take empathy to come close to understanding these types of situations.
Because he was reacting to what the proposed law would allow versus what the reality of the situation would be.
Tran was asked if the law would allow for an abortion to be performed at the moment of birth. And technically yes… the law would allow that. That is a separate issue from whether or not that situation would ever happen. It it taking an insane proposition and somehow making it common. It just doesn’t happen.
