I would imagine a large swath of Trump voters will “technically” disagree with the charges mainly because they want to protect the notion that they aren’t the bad guys who are fine with the overthrow of the Republic. But yeah- its part of a pattern that is obviously fine with some form of fascistic overthrow of the Republic- either overtly or tacitly.
The difference- in this discussion- is that the idea of a seditious conspiracy needs to be fought in favor of lesser charges. Because these charges now show to the world what the Right has been trying to fight- that it wasn’t simply a riot, or some people getting spontaneously out of hand- but involved people conspiring to overthrow the Republic.
The Right has been almost completely silent on the idea that the Republic was threatened and that elements of the Right are fine with that. By not voicing those concerns, many conservatives look like they are tacitly, if not overtly- supporting those aims.
Ummm…we’re talking about a group of about what, 11 idiots. And you think that indicates the republic was threatened?
The article says that as soon as the members of this alleged conspiracy hit the Capitol building they all wandered around on their own to different parts of the Capitol.
“Republic was threatened”. Sheesh.
These clowns may have broken laws, but no, they did not put the Republic at risk.
I think I’d find that Trump voters- almost entirely- would agree with you. They would not see that Trump, his allies, the militants or anyone else were actually looking to stop the transfer of power to Biden and thus end the Republic.
No. Neither does anybody else with an ounce of common sense. What you saw on 1/6/2021 was, as @TheDoctorIsIn so aptly stated, a clown show. A performance. It lasted a few hours and it was over, except for the political use by both sides.
Pure kabuki.
The Republic was lost long ago. The remnants are failing, but it’s not because of that little show.
I should amend that…There is a significant number of Trump voters believe the election was stolen and felt justified in trying to stop the transfer of power to Biden.
Oh, it’s still up in the air whether this handful of idiots thought they were going to take over the government, so you are wrong about that. You are right that I don’t think the government was ever at risk of being overthrown.
An ounce of reflection came out shortly after Jan 6 when McCarthy, McConell and many other conservative leaders spoke the truth about it- but it washed away back into brute partisanship and denialism within weeks. That brief window showed us that many conservatives know exactly what is happening- but won’t be honest about it.
And? They are allowed to make their legal case and failing enough evidence it will and has failed. They are not and did not try to take over the government by force, unless it is shown a small group of idiots pretended they were going to do this.
I generally think that a lot of conservatives really do see the big picture of what is happening but won’t say the truth because it would be “giving in” to prog demands or somehow “losing”. Or- there really is a genuine desire to end the Republic because its become too Lefty- or some such thing.
