Is the "American Dream" dead? Some look to greener pastures outside the US!

Speaking of Ireland:

Regarding my position, it’s purely based on reality, particularly the cost of living, to which there’s no magic fix. Regarding the comment about loving a country, well that’s not in any way my mindset one way or the other. All countries are bodies of land with varying numbers of people on it. One tries to make the best life for themselves and family, hence the feelings and or emotion are towards the life one seeks for themselves and family not the body of land or the people on it.

I forgot in the mind of a lib the new “American Dream” is getting various forms of welfare from the government.

instead of the tenements of NYC in the late 1800s.

it almost like no one has learned their history lesson.

Yep, there’s just all sorts of six figure jobs out there, in particularly for people coming from abject poverty with no education, no marketable skills, and don’t even speak a word of English!

That goes to the heart of conservativism. Your goal is to pass down to the next generation the laws and customs that allowed you to live well. Progressives want to change everything I personally don’t understand that mentality. I would get it if we lived in Darfur.

I think most people outside of Ireland look at Ireland and see a land of beauty with beautiful people, not sure why you guys need 20% foreign born citizens and busloads of migrants coming in daily from far away lands and cultures. Again I don’t understand it I think you guys had a good think going on, last time I was there was in 2008 it was beautiful.

As time goes by and the media feeds the nonsensical, nation destroying narratives that the sheople among us are swallowing…the United States is deteriorating from within. “We” need tax revenue generators but they’re being replaced by those who are ill prepared to deal with the responsibilities of adulthood. They expect government, financial assistance. This can’t go on much longer. We’re already over 35 trillion in debt, with 40% of taxes generated to just pay the interest. Personally…there isn’t much I want so I save, Save, SAVE. One goal is to insure that my grandchildren are mentally prepared plus a monetary trust fund to financially assist them long after myself and their grandmother are gone. The craziness all around us motivates me more to accomplish this goal.

I did my best to teach my kids fiscal responsibility and will teach my grandkids but some are better than others with money.

However I am not leaving my kids anything or if I do it will be very little. I enjoy my life, spend what I want when I want. My aim is to be the poorest man in the graveyard.

When I retire reverse mortgaging the ■■■■ out of my home and the bank can have it when I am gone. :grinning:

If I go first my wife will be ok financially and thats important to me. My kids sre working etc so dont need a windfall from me

What I’ve found is that my smiles come from the smiles I can put on the faces of those I love. As far as the wifey-poo goes, my goal is she can’t even spend the interest of her retirement. :sunglasses: :tumbler_glass:

The Anerican Dream was always about the freedom to live your life, not to build prosperity. If you what you seek to get out of living in America is wealth generation, then this isn’t the country for you.

saving money is great

when the fed goes digital currency, cash becomes worthless (and our savings (in cash bank accounts) as well)

Admittedly my parents taught me fiscal responsibility, too.

When I get a job my dad wants me to file for a Roth IRA and start saving. He told me to make sure to pay the highest interest debt first. Taught me how to shop at thrift stores.

My mom taught me how to use coupons. She became a smarter shopper as I grew up.

The basic standard for saving is to clearly define a want vs a need. Many find this simple concept…

…confusing. :sunglasses: :tumbler_glass:

Good luck on your life’s journey my young friend @FlameHeart

I agree with you but life is so boring if we never indulge in wants. I get we have to pay our bills and be sensible but my god we are a long time dead so nothing wrong with splurging and the odd irresponsible decision now and again.

But on the subject of fiscal responsibility, @Smyrna do you want to adopt my nearly 30 year old daughter. Hell right now I will pay you to adopt her (my bank balance would thank you) and maybe you can get through to her :sweat_smile::sweat_smile:

I needed to get my fingerprints on her when her play-doh was soft. At 30…it’s probably too hardened.

Lol, understood. Crazy she had the same upbringing but just went her own way financially.

The concept of the American Dream evolved into a notion of living certain type of lifestyle though; middleclass, married, single family home in the suburbs, white picket fence, two kids, two cars, vacations, etc. And there are many politicians who will happily promise this to the ignorant masses. The bottom line is that many people associate the American Dream as such and the hard reality, especially with the cost of living what it is, a person starting out today is in a much more difficult situation:

Think things started going downhill with Nafta or when the yankees traded Roger Maris.

PBS did a documentary or expose in real time about two families following their financial journey in life from their initial high paying jobs to the decades of adjustment with the closing and transfer manufacturing industries. It follows them and have follow ups on their lives and children’s lives from the Carter to the Trump administrations. No matter who was elected, they could not get out of the stagnant treadmill of recovering from their first and most ideal financial situation.

Its two hour long. But great life lessons to show your children about the reality of life.

Cost of living today is really a challenge for many people:
