Is the "American Dream" dead? Some look to greener pastures outside the US!

My grandma taught me to have a minimum savings that can cover the most expensive thing that could happen around here. Right now, that means a catastrophic failure of the well pump or the transmission in my wife’s Jeep going out. No need to charge a credit card.

The most important fiscal lesson she ever taught me:

ā€œIf you could afford to, would you buy this $800 TV right now?ā€

ā€œYes I actually need a new one! I only have a 13ā€ TV at home and that one would be WAY better!"

ā€œIf ALL you had was $800, would you spend every last cent you had on this TV?ā€

ā€œWell, noā€¦ā€

ā€œThen you clearly don’t need it in the first place!ā€

My father used to say that to identify a want vs a need…all you have to ask yourself is, ā€œwill I die if I don’t get itā€? If the answer is yes, it’s a need. :sunglasses: :tumbler_glass:

There will be lots of stories like this soon–where people don’t recognize that their skillsets are just a quirk of advanced civilization. All she can do for money is poke at an electronic box.

Is there only one ā€œAmerican Dreamā€?

A lot of contradictions in that post.

Horse racing is not a sport. It is abuse to feed an addiction.

She’s low intelligence.

I’m in no way arguing that there’s some unequivocal or universal definition of the so-called ā€œAmerican Dream.ā€ It’s an ideal which has become part of our psyche:

What Is The American Dream and How Much Does It Cost? – Forbes Advisor

If this from your link is it, I’d say it is definitely achievable:

The term originates from the 1931 bestseller The Epic of America by author James Truslow Adams, in which he defines the term as ā€œa dream of a better, richer and happier life for all our citizens of every rank.ā€

We did.

Also from the link:

the American Dream means you can enjoy a decent life of at least modest prosperity and security. In practical terms, that means a comfortable house, car and growing family.

You can add that in practical terms today that includes cell phones, flat screen TV, more than one car, etc. I would also add without relying on various forms of welfare.

In states like NJ, we are talking about a salary in the range of $200,000 per year.

Full of myths. Rosey Retrospective

It’s literally called the sport of kings, or didn’t you know.
Provides many jobs.
How bad do you think thoroughbred race horses are treated?
You are talking about gambling not horse racing.
One can gamble on anything.

You would be surprised just what some thoroughbred races horses go through. The ones who flunk out have the privilege of riding on the killer truck at three four years old.
The ones who flunk out and are bought by people looking for an event horse have to go back to the beginning of training and learn how to be a horse.

You’ve never been on or around a horse.

ā€œSport of kingsā€, yeah, that doesn’t say what you yhink it does. There’s a reason most of the world got rid of kings.

This one is usually wrong about most things.
