The “senior white house official” is Matt Pottinger. He certainly exists and serves the National Security Council. He gave a briefing on background from the white house podium to a room of of reporters as well as on call and said precisely what many sources quotes him as saying.
Perhaps trump isn’t blatantly lying here and instead has gone senile and believes by tweet alone he can make Matt Pottinger not exist.
Matt Pottinger needs to be fired for existing and make Trump look stupid.

i’m starting to think that Mueller is gonna find horrible stuff. this administration isn’t smart enough to hide bad stuff.
Trump is not necessarily lying here. He might simply be uninformed, or ignorant of what is going on. After all, if it has not been covered on Fox News, he might not know what his own people said.

Just count the number of tweets Trump is now making trying to discredit The investigation. Trey Goudy said it best, “stop acting guilty”. He knows what he has done, and I don’t believe it’s pretty.

I think it’s unlikely that Trump was actively lying - I think you’re right, I think he’s just so ■■■■■■■ inept that he doesn’t know what his own staff are saying.
I don’t even think that’s the issue. The issue is that he won’t take five minutes to verify something before he tweets. Ignorance is one thing, not having the ability to assess a situation before reacting is what scares me.
The biggest issue for me is that he won’t admit that he was wrong.
I don’t trust a man who can’t admit when they were wrong, and Donald Trump will never do so.
he thinks he can just bully everyone (more specifically get really loud and aggressive to get what he wants).
he tried the same thing on that widow in Atlantic City. the one who wouldn’t sell to him. he trashed her all the time. she won in court, never did sell to him and his casino eventually went belly up.
