Do you think republicans would complain as much about immigration from the south if the immigrants coming in voted 70% republican?
I would imagine the situation would be more like Cubans in Florida who often courted by republicans. The Latinos from Mexico and further south overwhelmingly vote democrat. If you were a small government conservative you might have a different view on immigration from the south.
Let’s say Poland was on the southern border and members of the (Law and Order) hard right party were flowing in illegally into the US, and the GOP were doing everything they could to pave a path for their citizenship., I would imagine the left would be doing everything they could (righty so) to not let that happen.
There’s a difference between lower economic growth and lower economic growth per capita. The first one is doubtless of greater concern to billionaires, the latter of more concern to the rest.
But overcrowded cities, finite water supplies, traffic congestion etc. yes…are more important than economic growth.
How many people living in a huge metropolitan area think to themselves…gee, it would be great if we just had more crowding and more traffic.
they ironic part is, they would. Immigrants from the southern countries are very religious, huge into family values, anti abortion and anti drug and very conservatives on a lot of stance. coming from a lot of horribly failed states that purpose socialist and left wing revolution forms of government they would gravitate toward a very solid conservative voting block. W for example made huge headway into em especially with how Clinton dealt with the Elian Gonzales debacle. Jeb was obviously planning on going on that route too. but all of that solid groundwork has been burned and salted for generations
In 2012 less Latinos voted for Romney than Trump, and Romney was not a build the wall type of presidential nominee.
Could that happen and up to 40% vote republican as did Bush jr in 2004? Possibly, but highly doubtful and regardless 40% is still a loss. Conservativism is dying and a big part has to do with changing demographics from immigration. I could care less of their skin color, I do deeply care however on how they vote.
I don’t think a small government conservative will ever win the presidency again unless the economy is in such dire situation voters do it out of desperation. I think you can understand why we are highly skeptical and reluctant on immigration from the south as we understand why the left wants it.
i get what you are getting at but conservatism is not dying because of changing demographics from immigration, conservatism (or what passes for it nowdays) is dying because of changing demographic period. immigration demographic is a small part of it imo. Somone on this forum brought up the point that while people are leaving the GOP from almost all demographic the current GOP cardholders are becoming more and more rabid Trump/nationalist and becoming kinda like Trump concentrate extract which in turns drives even more people away.
you look at this graph from 2012 and you can definitively see there was a trend after 96 of hispanic gravitating toward the GOP but when McCain and Romney, the latter of which would not support a Dream Act, advocated for self deportation were definitely seen as not as friendly and thus the drop.
what happened in 2016 and since then well almost guaranteed a secure voting block for democrats which they honestly for other views dont match up.
