Trump left the white house. His attending the inauguration was not needed. There is a thing called freedom of speech in the United States that your country must not have. Trump and any citizen can say and think whatever they want, and it is not illegal. There is no rule that out going Presidents have to attend the inauguration of anyone. I would say it provides context for the present, and enables kids to understand how far we’ve come in a relatively short time.

Ok, how does that knowledge produce opportunities for a better life for those children?

They’re informed citizens. When it comes time to participate in our democracy, they have some grasp of why it’s important. They learn that it matters.

You could achieve the same end by teaching them fairness, open-mindedness and equity of opportunity without ever making whiteness the villain of our history.
