Aside from fleeing into the woods, all of that seems like a reasonable expression of 2A rights. I deliberately use the word expression, because we have definitely moved into expressive assertion phase of gun rights.
They were traveling across multiple states. Federal law states when traveling with Firearms across states in a vehicle. They are to be unloaded, locked in a case, and out of reach from driver and passengers.
To whom and situations to which it applies. That law was passed to protect the right to keep arms when passing through states in violation of the 2nd, so it probably applies in the case of that yankee hell hole.
It is not a requirement for all interstate travel.
The law is a safe harbor law. If the conditions are satisfied, it overrides any state laws to the contrary. It does not impose any punishment for not meeting those conditions.
