There are too many of them.
They can react in certain ways…punishing the student via suspension is not one of them.
If they think there’s a threat, they can alert the proper authorities.
This only becomes a difficult thing if we believe schools are baby sitters.
Until the courts declare otherwise in fact they do.

Sknyluv:
I think a more apt example would be if that student posted on social media that he was going to fight someone at school the next day and the school suspended him for it.
I don’t think he should be suspended even for saying that.
Only if he attempts to fight the student should anything happen…and then only if on campus should the school do anything.
No prior restraint.
Agree. Not suspension. But the school should take action to prevent an altercation. Mediation possibly.

No they don’t. They have egg and sperm donors. A lot of those aren’t actually parenting and rely on the state to do their parenting for them.
What about the parents who do parent their children?

Until the courts declare otherwise in fact they do.
They should change that…

But a school can and should react to speech when warranted.
They did. “Warranted” is the issue. The school doesn’t have boundaries. Just like all agents of the state.
This was real clear cut where I grew up
At school, or school activity, or within site or earshot of one watch your mouth.
And that’s that.
What about them? You think they support it?

But the school should take action to prevent an altercation.
Prior restraint? Why?
How can a school “prevent” an altercation?

What about them? You think they support it?
Not at all. The school should never take the place of a parent.

or within site or earshot of one watch your mouth.
That part I disagree with.
Stopped me from watching outside the fence of the football game and telling the principal what I thought of him.
I considered it a fair compromise
Or sue you. But hey, who’s watching?

This only becomes a difficult thing if we believe schools are baby sitters.
Or exist to determine what constitutes and to construct “good” citizens.
Educated citizens I agree with. Not “good”.

Or sue you. But hey, who’s watching?
Ok, or sue you. Doesn’t change anything.
So we generally know what was said in the social media by these students.
Would we accept being called into the local FBI office and sentenced to 10 days in county jail for this same posts? All white participants?

If a school is notified of a possible threat (fight) I think it would be in their best interest to prevent that altercation. If only pulling the parties in question out of class to discuss the issue or simply telling the kids to “not fight”, they should attempt to advert the altercation.

If it is off school grounds it is none of the school’s business.

What are you thoughts on threats of life.
Like a student posts on social media, off campus, that he will shot up his school tomorrow. Should he be suspended?
