I don’t know. But it does seem to be the magic number. Amazon pays that at a minimum no matter what state they’re located. Even at my job, no matter what department, 15 is minimum. But even a living wage, it’s not that high. You’ll barely scrape by. It only spikes when you add dependents. No business is going to set your wage based on dependents.
Speaking of New Jersey, I was walking through a Shoprite yesterday and I saw a big sign stating, NOW HIRING, make up to 13 dollars an hour to start. It was all bolded in caps. As if they’re handing out something great. Minimum wage is like 12 something.
I’ve been working as a toll collector for the better part of 24 years. I have a water bottle overflowing with silver quarters and dimes. I should probably cash that in. Not all at once of course.
On the nickel, are you talking about those old war nickels? The one’s with the letter on the back? Or the old buffalo nickels? I got 35 cents for either one going back about 10 years ago. Don’t know about now however.
I’m not saying 15 dollars an hour is crap. It’s much better than the $3.35 I made back in 1984. About a few weeks in a manager came to me and told me I had to pick up the pace. I said ok, just never did. Under my breath I said you get what you pay for.
You have to consider that. If you’re going to pay someone absolute garbage then expect their production to mirror that. I know, it’s my fault. It is my fault. I shouldn’t have taken the job. I just didn’t expect to be worked like I just rowed in two weeks ago. Never again did I make that little to start. That was ridiculous.
Wonder why you don’t know why they are on my payroll? That’s right you have no idea what the real workforce is like because you have no idea how to run and start a business.
But see in my business if you pick up the pace don’t have to be told what to do every minute you move up fast. You go from starting pay of 16.00 an hour to 25.00 an hour in a few short months.
Instead of doing manual labor you get to operate equipment.
My workers are paid what they are worth to the company.
You spend a lot of time sitting down, standing around talking on you phone and have to be told what to do every minute of the day your not doing to make much more than starting pay.
If I have to bail your butt out of jail, get calls from the motels that your causing problems, have to advance you money two days after pay day every week your not going to move up to better pay.
I don’t disagree and anticipate that. It’s for that reason, up front, I’d make it known that there would be very severe penalties for doing so. I’d also make it to where the prospective student would have to pass a standardized test, that’s given in a controlled environment so as to minimize potential fraud.
To be honest, I don’t know a lot about jobs that aren’t union. Most unions have a 4-5 year pay scale and no reward for hard work. Little to no incentive. So my situation was depressing at that pay rate until I got out of there. But I don’t see starting at 16 an hour with incentives as being bad at all for today.
For small businesses, payroll is a tax deduction. Payroll is a business expense.
“Salaries and Wages as Tax-Deductible Expenses. Generally speaking, the salaries, wages, commissions, and bonuses you have paid to the employees of your small business are tax-deductible expenses if they are deemed to be: Ordinary and necessary. Reasonable in amount.”
We spent the last year calling “essential workers” heroes for working over the pandemic, but some people are mad that people are suggesting paying them up to, hot damn, $15 an hour or, gosh, more.
