He had back-up. Four armed plain-clothed cops in plain view a few feet down the hall and an armed-to-the-teeth SWAT team in the stairway. He may have not realized the latter were there, but he was well aware (or should have been if he was not blinded by panic) of the other four. And those four apparently didnât see enough of a threat to pull their guns.

Huge mob? There were more police officers present when she was shot than protesters.
And the people who were being protected had already left the area. You can see them in the video being ushered out by police at the far end of the hallway well before Byrd shot Ashli.
