Mark Milley is defending allegations of “secret” calls with his Chinese counterpart, saying the conversations are “vital” to “reducing tensions” and “avoiding unintended consequences or conflict,” maintaining that the calls were coordinated with high-level defense officials.

“The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs regularly communicates with Chiefs of Defense across the world, including with China and Russia. These conversations remain vital to improving mutual understanding of U.S. national security interests, reducing tensions, providing clarity and avoiding unintended consequences or conflict,” Milley spokesman Col. Dave Butler said in a statement Wednesday.

And it goes on to say it was all coordinated among the staff.

From that article, it may be that Woodward was hyping the conversation to sell his new book. There is the part about saying that Miley would tell the Chinese if an attack was imminent. But that is different than telling the Chinese that an attack was imminent. Miley would have known that there was no such attack planned and his words would have been meaningless.
My guess is that is how this will turn out after being investigated…a tool to sell a book.
