The issue with that is that why would they hate Carter for the Shah issue? He’s the one whose administration dropped open support of the Shah in 1978 once the earliest reports of the revolution broke out.
We gave him asylum at that point, but Carter openly told him that we wouldn’t support him trying to stay in power.
Reagan, like Trump, was way less predictable. They were unsure what his administration would do if the crisis continued.
If anything that helped Carter’s negotiating team. Since if the Iranians kept playing hardball after the election they could just point out that the Reagan guys were way less predictable than they were. Better agree to something now rather than deal with them.
That falls under the category of too little too late as far as the Iranians were concerned. Regardless of how we may have seen Carter’s support for the Shah, the Iranians saw it very very differently. Carter was a focus of that blame.
I suspect that the people who really deserve props were this were probably the Egyptians. And I’m sure they used every tool in their arsenal to get Hamas to agree.
“How would you guys like to deal with Trump when he takes office again? Might want to take this deal now rather than wait and try to deal with that lunatic.” I’m sure they said stuff like that.
Frankly, even though we would have never done it because hey it was the Cold War, best thing we could have done looking back was supporting the Communists over the Khomeini nutcases.
It’s kind of surprising that the Soviets didn’t support the Communists.
And even if they weren’t and this was just a public relations move by Trump to make a threat after he received a briefing it’s still good public relations and smart
I suspect most of the thanks belong to the Egyptians. They’re the ones who almost always broker these ceasefires because they’re the one group of guys Israel and Hamas will both talk to.
