What would DeSantis have actually gained if this was a deliberate dog whistle? Who wasn’t planning on voting for him in November who now will? Seems to me he would lose far more than he would gain.

The point is he used the word “Monkey” in direct confluence with an African-American. Had he said “screw” instead, there would be no thread. Had he said f***, the thread would be much funnier. But he didn’t.

Yeah. From a common sense position (not applicable here of course) it would be a total waste of time for DeSantis to be using a dog whistle approach. If white racists were going to vote, how many would be voting for Gillum anyway? There would be zero purpose to use such a gimmick.
