The only thing he told me was that someone had called in and reported a strange person walking through the neighborhood. As I was walking and it was dark, I don’t know how he could have determined strange. He patted me down and when he felt the wallet he grabbed it, no permission asked. I could have had a fit and started going on about my rights, but I wanted to go home instead of some station house.
By the way, we are talking twenty years or more ago.

You don’t have to “pitch a fit” to stand up for your rights.

You very well could have made a case for an illegal search if all the police had to go on was a “strange person walking through the neighborhood”. They need REASONABLE suspicion with more facts than that.

And you can defend your rights without having to be a dick about it. I do all the time.

Can’t help if it doesn’t register. It was late at night, I had my wallet in my pants as I do today when I walk. He grabbed my wallet, checked my identity on his radio, and gave me a brief lecture on the dangers of walking late at night.

I’d be upset if a cop stopped me to lecture me about walking.

I guess if I wandered into a dangerous part of town or something…

But there is absolutely no excuse for ‘checking your identity on the radio’. ■■■ does that even mean? Why would he ask you for your ID and why would he have to check you on his radio?
