Yet Global Warming is all on us…to be responsible for, and to fix. The US has become more and more responsible for cleaning up it’s messes over the course of my life time. When I was a kid…Lake Erie used to catch on fire…and on the south end of Lake Michigan there used to be beach closures due to Raw Sewage testing too high for safety. The steel mills right after sun down used to emit huge plumes of black smoke…and shortly before dawn they’d stop. Just things I used to observe as a kid who fished the great lakes. We have a long way to go on air pollution here…but it’s tons better than it was. When I was a kid, you used to be able to tell when the wind switched to the north, because you could smell and see the smog from US Steel and we were 20-25 miles inland. Now you get a north wind…all you know is it got colder. There is no more pollution smell this far inland. Emissions are cleaner.
I can’t remember the last time I saw people riding their emission free bikes in a crowded city wearing surgical masks to keep the pollutants out of their lungs, here in the US. But yet…the icecaps…it’s on me? US?
Fix it? What makes you think it is broken? What temperature is the world supposed to be?
The rest of your post was about actual pollution … and we in the US have made enormous strides toward cleaning up, our water, air and land over the last 50 years and preventing it from occurring again in the future. Most of the rest of the world has done very little by comparison and some countries have done next to nothing to curb pollution and are some continuing to get even worse. Calling CO2 a pollutant just so you can place the US high on the list of polluters is disingenuous at best. A more accurate description of that is dishonesty.
Why is it Samm, whenever I agree with you…you still manage to try to make an argument out of it. I was saying YET, everyone else in the world thinks it is our problem to fix. Why do we have to be responsible…when we are not Mexico, India or China devastating the air with their particular brand of unregulated industry. That is what I was saying. We have done more than our share. One of the things I support about Trump was taking us out of the Paris Accord. I don’t think we should be in any UN sponsored agreements on climate, as they are meant to harm the US…while China, India and Mexico get away with what they are doing.
The rest of my post speaks to how in my 50+ years of live we have actually cleaned up our part of the planet. I can go to the Indiana Dunes State Park on just about any day, climb up even the smallest Sand dune. Hell I don’t even have to do that most days. And stare to the North West just a bit and see the Chicago skyline. As a kid…that only happened when there was a north wind that blew the pollution inland.
I think that is amazing progress in 50 years time. It’s not us. It is the rest of the world that lags behind.
And I believe that global temperatures are artificially elevated by Urban Heat Islands…which is where a lot of the record breaking temperatures come from.
Of course if you look at those things…actual global temperature is going to rise. These urban sprawls have nothing but pavement, thousands of miles of black topped streets, fewer and fewer trees, and more and more automobile traffic heating up the air.
I don’t think there is any temperature the world should be at. I have always thought that climate is cyclical, the place warms and cools in vast periods of centuries at a time.
I also believe that the bigger problem is garbage. I believe that we have to figure out how to incinerate garbage cleanly and use it to supply electricity. If we can burn coal more cleanly…and the technology is there. Why can’t we burn garbage to generate electricity. My biggest pet peeve regarding our global pollution footprint is these massive trash islands floating around our oceans. WHY? I am not saying that is part of global warming…just saying it is so unnecessary.
