I was very moved when Bob Dole was helped up and he saluted his fellow WWII veteran. The emotion in his face would have cracked and thawed any iceberg.
I wondered if Dole knew what he was doing or if he was told to do that by a handler.
His eyes IMO said he was very clued in mentally but his body was long gone.
