LOL…China isn’t going to defend Panama. They might invade Taiwan.

To be fair I don’t think they’ve ever lost a war.

At some point they’re going to try to take Taiwan. That’s like been a central part of the Chinese story for a century now and it’s separation is a huge violation of the One China Policy that the CCP and historically all Chinese governments since the 1st Dynasty have treated as a religion.

However, I do honestly believe the CCP wants to reunify with Taiwan in any other way first before force is employed because they know hard it would be. They’re really hoping that a future Taiwanese (just saying that word is a violation of One China technically) government, through economic and political pressures, will agree to a One Country, Two Systems arrangement similar to how Macau is run.

The thing that matters with this thing is Sovereignty over the island. Notably Taiwan doesn’t even call itself Taiwan. They are officially The Republic of China, the remnants of the guys who lost the Civil War in 1949. And both sides play a very complicated game that doesn’t upend the One China status quo. They both believe deeply in it. But new Taiwanese political parties are kind of throwing things upside down. Because it has been so long now since 1949 and Taiwan’s democratic transition in the early 90s that a truly new Taiwanese identity, separate from the Chinese identity, is growing. And the CCP and the KMT are freaking out about it and have been since the 90s.

I’m wondering if taking Taiwan by force would be in their best interest. Even with a best-case scenario, they would be left with smoldering ruins. The world economy would plunge into chaos and China would be left to bear the tremendous cost of rebuilding Taiwan.

I just don’t see it in the cards.

I believe the best they can hope for is to try and isolate Taiwan with a lot of saber-rattling to try and scare off those who continue to support Taiwan.

They’ll do everything in their power to avoid that outcome. They want Taiwan to voluntarily submit to what Hong Kong and Macau has. One country, two systems. It’s how the Chinese do things.

The political and economic system doesn’t matter. The only that matters is the sovereignty. That’s what they want.

A full invasion will only be done if there is literally no other option and Taiwan formally separates from idea of China. Like they formally change their name and declare full independence. That will force the mainland’s hand.

And Taiwan knows that. That’s why they’re putting this off for as long as possible.

What if Taiwan policy is designed to force the US to compete?

Compete how?

they kicked American butt in war of 1812.

They kicked our butts in 1777 too.

and the french and indian wars before that.

That was French Canadians. And the British were the real winners of the prototype World War. France got ■■■■■■ real bad by treaty afterwards.
