The lie is years old, when he told us he would release his return after the audit. That was a return for 2015. Is it still under audit?

From the article and a fact that is backed up by statements from the IRS:
No law bars a filer from releasing tax returns that are being audited.
So Trump lied or is ignorant of the law when he claimed that he could not release his returns because they are under audit.
He can. He just doesn’t want to. Even though he promised he would.
Cool story. He doesn’t have a choice.

He has said he can’t release them while under audit.
Once again, the courts will likely decide; but not before the 2020 election.
Of course not. He takes an oath to the constitution. He doesn’t need the President’s permission to honor that oath and the president can’t ask him to not follow the oath.

There is nothing earth-shattering about this request. The Ways and Means Committee has the legal authority to request and receive the tax returns of any US citizen.
It is cut and dry.
There is nothing to adjudicate.
Settled law.
They will have his returns by Summer.
The IRS will not release anyone’s tax returns if the President explicitly tells them not to. It simply won’t happen.
