My opposition to the wall is because any wall can be breached. Walls we have already at the border are constantly being tunneled under. And climbed over. Or flown over. And a wall does nothing about visa abuse, or flotillas or 100 other vectors of entry.

I want our border security to be conducted by making it impossible for illegals to function financially in this nation. E-verify not only for jobs, but for housing, education, government benefits, medical services (other than the most basic of emergency services), etc.

Cross the river and the desert if you want, but you’re not going to be able to function once you get here.

The one thing my approach cannot answer, though, is how to address the criminal element that can cross to this side of the river. (That ARE doing so today.)

Motion detectors, drones, FLIR monitoring. Even a lot of that can be automated with remote sensors combined with computer evaluation eliminating false positives for animals with algorithms that recognize human beings for ground motion.

RADAR and Heat Sensors for airborne.

Has there ever been a wall built that kept MOST of the traffic on the other side of it? Sure worked for Israel. The Soviets used them to keep people from fleeing Socialism/Communism. What about the North/South Korean border? Is that wall being penetrated with great frequency?

It’s just silly to think a border wall isn’t going to have an impact. Hell, we have PROOF from the places along the border where they DID build a wall and crossings dropped dramatically. This isn’t secret information, it’s out there and a quick search produces it.

First, none of those things you described are remotely close to our situation of a 2000 mile border. Second, it doesn’t address all of the ways to circumvent a border wall (eg, climb over it or come by water). Third, it doesn’t address the complete disregard for property rights along the border. Lastly, it’s a stupid solution that won’t even be effective for stopping at least half the source of illegal immigration (visa over stays).

Quit being stuck on stupid.

That’s part of the solution but making it harder to get across is also part of the solution. The whole e-verify nonsense… how does that stop people from mowing lawns? Painting houses? Pretty much most of the work that illegals do in this nation are direct hire by people and it’s just not rational to make e-verify a requirement for anyone that wants to hire a contractor. I agree that anything passed out by government should be closely controlled but making me go through e-verify to put a tenant into my house? Not acceptable.

If I were in charge, I most certainly WOULD call for you to e-verify your tenants. As a landlord myself, I would be willing – with conditions. The system (as it stands now) is not adequately reliable or easy enough to use. I would need it to be as simple as logging in and entering the prospective tenant’s info, and then getting back an approval code that I would keep on file. If I were ever audited to prove the veracity of my tenants, I would have the paper trail. (In fact, the record of the approval should also be stored on the government’s side of the verification.)

That’s part of the rub. Right now the system not very good. But it can be. And it can be done for far cheaper than building the wall.

As for mowing lawns or other ad hoc jobs, nothing stops that. I wouldn’t expect the average homeowner to be responsible for e-verifying that sort of thing. But then again, the guy who earns some pocket cash that way still won’t have a place to live, or any other major service available to him.

For the record, I AM attuned to the concerns that this could lead to a Gestapo world. “Show me your papers!” And the list of transactions that would require e-verify could grow to burdensome levels.

To be blunt, though, I don’t expect anyone in charge to propose this sort of thing. Not from either side. It’s politically treacherous territory.

I wouldn’t say that E-verify is “not very good”, it’s actually quite effective. But it can still be improved with cross linking the SSA, IRS, and State Departments of Records (Births & Deaths).
