Maybe because transporting large quantities of drugs is easier to do going through a checkpoint where you’ve got an actual highway that you can drive on as opposed to carrying them across the middle of the desert? If the bulk of drugs are coming in through ports of entry it would make more sense to focus on those areas.

Yep. That is the effect of a wall… pushing the illegal operations into a funnel that can be more easily controlled.

You’re claiming that drugs are smuggled using the easiest and most efficient method because there are walls? Trying to smuggle through ports of entries would be the first option for a drug smuggler and they would only resort to trying to smuggle through the middle of the desert if it were too difficult to do it through ports of entry. There are tons of drugs getting through, so it is apparently not easy to control.
