SATs go SJW - SATs will now contain secret 'adversity scores' 🚨🚨

The left’s war on science and statistics continues.

SAT scores will now have secret “adversity scores”, and will be given additional points for factors such as having English as a second language and being the child of a single parent, or living in an area with high crime.

Are you an Asian-American, born to parents who raised you speaking English, who worked hard to give you good educational opportunities? Too bad, because that “dreamer” who is a gang member and who was raised by a single mother now has a higher ‘adversity score’, meaning he will be taking your place!

America’s educational system has gone nuts, and now is now actively punishing people for having English as their native language or for having a mother and father.

I didn’t realize that gang members typically had high SAT’s and regularly apply for college.

The ridiculousness of “fairness.” Trying to make this test meaningless I suppose.

Equality is an enemy of equity.

Interesting. As a white male in the 80’s I scored much better on the ACT (an alternate test from the SAT’s used by many colleges) than some female and minority classmates who got scholarships thanks to affirmative action. My ACT score was a 34 which is like getting a 1400-1500 score on the SAT - not perfect but extremely high.

However as a child of a single parent who also lived below the poverty line I would have gotten bonus points in at least those two categories. As will many white males. Wonder if they’ll find a loophole to deny them because of their so called “privilege.”

Sigh

More overblown panic from the right who have no idea of which they speak.

I think it could have some merit. If you have someone who is borderline for acceptance, but realize they came from a high poverty school, and had a lot to overcome, then imagine if they were able to escape that and focus fully on school?

Vs another kid with same credentials but who grew up with a silver spoon in their mouth.

Extra info would be welcome in being a deciding factor in the two cases.

Sounds like someone trying to make a better life for themselves and living out the American Dream.

But the Trumpsters gotta rage at something I guess.

How were you privy to other’s test scores and financial aid details?

You should be in support of the adversity scores. It would have benefited you. But I guess if you want something to whine about, you can pretend that white people won’t benefit.

A child reared in a silver spoon household may have a lot to overcome as well. Does money buy good parents? A healthy environment? Does poverty mean a child automatically doesn’t have good parents? Look to Ben Carson as an example.

I also have to note that once again, the middle class is being lost and forgotten in the clash between the haves and the have nots.

IMO, if entering academia only the brightest need to apply. The standards need to be moved up, not down.

Totally not understanding why anyone is entitled to acceptance to a four year college—SAT, ACT, or no test.

If a student really wants to improve his or education after high school, or pursue a degree, it’s automatic admission to two year college. Associate of Arts and Science are generally automatic admission to state four year colleges.

To be quite frank, I wonder if SAT or any test is a good indication of how successful at college level work one may be. Perhaps difficulty of high school classes & factors like extracurricular activities & community service are more reliable indicators.

What’s your point?

Do you think college admissions officers have no idea what they’re doing?

Thank you for being an example for why the SATs should not be dumbed down and only the brightest need apply.

That’s exactly what it was designed to do, and has done successfully for almost 100 years.

It’s an IQ test for college level work.

It’s time for you to go home.

Condensed version - No group should be given special privileges in academia based on their income, class, or skin pigmentation.

After you, my dear. :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

DMK may correct me, I am conflicted on the subject as I understand the need for such programs for a time after the civil rights movement but often wonder should there be a cutoff date on these programs, and if so what determine it?

Tbh this isn’t a huge issue to me either way.

Our scores were known to teachers who then told everyone. There was no privacy on this stuff. We also knew from first to last the rankings of every student based on GPA as we sat in that order.

As to financial scores it was announced at high school graduation what scholarships and for how much each student was being awarded. I was the salutatorian of my class (#2 GPA - 3.99 as I got an 89.4% in one class my freshman year which was my only B) and had the 2nd highest ACT score as well (behind only the #1 in the class) and I got a $500 scholarship for being the child of a parent who went to the same school I was going to. Others below me got many scholarships based on merit, grades, etc. I just didn’t fit any of the quota boxes as a white male. It was made even more obvious about ten years later when my cousin graduated. Though she is biologically my cousin she was raised by my mother because her parents were useless. Her father is 50% Native American and a tribe member making her 25% Native American, though you would never guess it by her blonde hair and blue eyes. But it was enough to check the “minority” box on her college applications. She got a 25 on the ACT and had about a 3.0 GPA. She was offered full ride scholarships to multiple colleges. We were raised in the same house by the same mother but I was a white male and she was for quota purposes a Native American female. And that quota difference made all the difference in the world.

And everyone in high school knew who lived in the trailer park (me), didn’t have a father (again me), was poor (my mom), or came from two parent homes (the majority besides me and my cousin).

There are no secrets in high school.
