Perhaps if you had actually read my post you would have known that the letter was not about San Francisco or California, it was about poop on the street in Portland … which was in context to the preceding posts it replied to.
I would actually say it wasn’t WW2 that bailed us out but the how the wealth of the West … and Japan … flowed towards us as they rebuilt from rubble after the war.
The war, the government spending during the war, did not create wealth for the country.
But selling stuff after the war did.
Now, there are other important aspects of this that had long term implications – such as how we emerged from the war with an expanded industrial base often made up of new physical plants that were still older technology – but what made us a true economic superpower was the capitalism after the bombing and, domestically, people finally being able to spend their money again.
Also, the GI Bill (its effect wouldn’t be felt till the boom was underway) was at least related to actual service … and not hand outs just because people are here. It is actually lawful for the federal, as an employer, to set pay and benefits for service … but not for welfare.
The “boom” was caused by the GI Bill. The government printed money and distributed it to the millions of people who returned from the war – most of them, anyway. Some might call that a handout.
