I’m really not trying to be contrarian here - and this is certainly not an area I know much about. Nor do I have any strong opinions about what Census should count…I’m only thinking of this from the perspective of survey design, which it turns out I do have some experience with.
Wouldn’t that series of question exclude everyone here on an immigrant visa? family members here as lawful permanent residents? skilled workers and investors? Of course maybe there’s a reason to exclude those
It would not be difficult to design a survey tbat comies with the law.
BUT
It will likely require more than just restoring the citizenship question,
and
Congress gave the EPA broad discretion to decide what is a legal refrigerator, and often delegates power ti the executive, but . . . Did it actually authorize the census bureau to make this change?
With how ICE is rounding up people off the street, good luck getting anyone with a questionable legal status to disclose that status to a government representative. I thought the entire point of including citizenship status was to scare off immigrants from participating in the census, therefore lowering numbers.
I’m guessing a case can be made that free persons does not have to include by definition those here illegally.
On the other hand, you are correct that not counting them isn’t going to make the problems associated with them go away, and what this is us a calculated effort on the part of the GOP to try and cement their power in the federal government because they will make the assumption that there are more illegals in blue districts than red…and this is likely not an unwarranted assumption.
So you think we should deport people like that woman who was here from Iran 47 years ago, who was following the instructions of teh immigration court that stayed her deportation and was here legally?
