Why is it so hard to believe that people die and the government is not notified so they can stop the checks? Somebody was getting and cashing them. Trump said they are going to investigate to see who was getting the money.

Who asked for evidence? Everybody I know took the ones who found the “waste fraud and abuse” word for truth.
Funeral homes, hospitals, medical examiners and other officials are required by law to report every death. A few slip between the cracks here and there, but is is not some huge number and they always get caught. To say it’s a big problem is an outright lie started by DOGE I think
What are you quoting? Social security is set to become insolvent around 2033. That’s not a partisan statement, it’s math. I appreciate Trump’s efforts to improve the system, but these moves do nothing to solve the big problem.
The insolvency issue is a red herring the two sides use as a bludgeon to beat each other over the head with. Other “deadlines” like 2033 have came and went with Congress passing new laws to extend solvency further. Kicking the can down the road I’m sure, but it’s happened before and it will happen again.
Even DOGE didn’t state anyone was receiving checks. All they found was names/birthdates in one database file. What happened is then people “inferred” they must be getting checks and people without critically thinking bought into it.
Trump’s comment, if he said that, just proves what I just stated. If they knew checks were written they would know who they are.
This supposedly happened months ago. What’s happened since? Nada.

You make it sound so simple. I disagree it’s a red herring. Social Security’s outgoing payments far exceed its income, and that will only get worse in the years to come. That’s a real problem. Neither party wants to be responsible for its collapse, so a solution might be possible. But I wouldn’t advise young people to count on it being there.
