You know when you find out that the tax dollars that you pay to the city that you live and work in go towards paying out over $700 million for settlements against the NYPD for their conduct… that is money that could go to many many things that would improve the lives of the residents of the city but is instead squandered… maybe it is okay to question their conduct.

And now, allowing 800,000 foreign nationals to vote in NYC’s election is more than enough of a vote to determine the outcome of NYC’s next election and would, in fact, infringe upon the suffrage right of NYC citizens by diluting and canceling out their vote.
The scary truth about allowing foreigners to vote in local elections is, when acts of corruption infect an electoral process in one jurisdiction “they transcend mere local concern and extend a contaminating influence into the national domain.” Justice DOUGLAS in United States v. Classic (1941)”.
The sickening fact is, allowing foreigners to vote in NYC’s elections is tantamount to denying NYC’s citizens’ their right to vote as indicated by our very own Supreme Court:
“[T]he right of suffrage can be denied by a debasement or dilution of the weight of a citizen’s vote just as effectively as by wholly prohibiting the free exercise of the franchise.” Reynolds v. Sims, 377 U. S. 533, 555 (1964).”

What has been unfolding over the past year are the scandals about the mishandling and outright criminal neglect in the NYC Corrections system.
There is movement to not throw everyone in jail for every little thing because it costs a lot of money to do so, a lot of times it serves no purpose other than to make politicians look like they are “tough on crime” and it can cause active harm to low level offenders.
One could point to the origin of this movement starting with the high profile case 3 million dollar payout to the family of Kalief Browder, a 16 year old who was held in Rikers for 3 years… two of those years in solitary confinement… for stealing a backpack.
He never went to trial.
He killed himself while in custody.
I don’t think that people outside of NYC understand what is going on with the news of the NYC Corrections deep deep problems that the taxpayers are very unhappy with.

I knew about corruption at Rikers Island back in the 60’s when, e.g., I noticed thousands of dollars were authorized each month for thousands of pounds of meat which never reached the inmates food trays.

No one is promoting throwing everyone in jail. They are promoting throwing criminals in jail who are committing armed robbery, burglaries, smash and grab, assaulting police officers, and other such crimes against the good people of NYC.

What is being proposed is pre trail detention being cut and a reordering of the Class of Felony things get prosecuted under.
One can listen to what is happening in the local politics and understand why this is happening, what it is reaction to and what is actually going on or… and this is what is going to happen… it will be dismissed because libby libby lib lib someething something Soros.

It is going to be a sad lesson in moral risk. Low to mid level crime is going to explode. And for the victim, crime is crime.

Who said no punishment at all? There are other punishments besides incarceration.
Someone made the statement earlier that stores have insurance and that will cover any losses so these little thefts shouldn’t mean anything.
