New name for DoD?

US defense secretary Pete Hegseth has initiated a public discussion on social media platform X about renaming the Department of Defense to its historical name ‘Department of War’.

“Better name? Have my thoughts…welcome yours.” Hegseth wrote while sharing a public poll regarding the new name of the Department of Defense.

As of 9 pm IST, about 53.6% of X users voted for changing the name to ‘Department of War’, while 46.4% of users voted in favour of retaining the Department of Defense.

Department of War is arguably more accurate than Department of Defense since the last time the US was actually defending itself against an invading foreign army was during the War of 1812.

Of course, given DoD’s history of failed audits and wasteful spending, is a return to the Department of War really the best alternative?

Any other suggestions?

Department of Inefficiency and Corruption?

Black Hole on the Potomac?

The name is irrelevant.

Not to soldiers.

In rational world, yes. In the real world, people are rarely rational, and doublethink is a real thing.

The Ministry of Peace concerns itself with war, the Ministry of Truth with lies, the Ministry of Love with torture and the Ministry of Plenty with starvation. These contradictions are not accidental, nor do they result from ordinary hypocrisy: they are deliberate exercises in doublethink.–George Orwell, 1984 Ministries in Nineteen Eighty-Four - Wikipedia

Why do you think that the Department of War became the Department of Defense to begin with?

For some, the flag is just piece of colored cloth . . .

Of course it depends on the flag.

I have no idea, I know the UK changed its dept name from war to defense.

But if they want to change it then change it but wonder if they will research the cost of the change. With the focus on saving money maybe now it is not the best time.

Every sign, every piece of paper, every computer application. Anything labelled DOD will have to be changed and that all costs money.

The fact that Orwell wrote 1984 soon after the creation of the Ministry of Defence should be a clue.

The road signs for the Pentagon already say “Pentagon”. Software updates happen all the time. Use of letterhead is rare these days.

We have name changes all the time. Were you similarly concerned about expenses for other name changes?

Or only ones that actually make sense?

Lol sure there is no signage or documents with DOD.

And yes, ROI is important dependent on the topic. If its deemed the military will be better off with a DOW instead of DOD then go for it.

And yes I know ROI can mean something other than dollars and cents.Sometimes changes are made just for the heck of it with no downstream impact assessment.

So you were doing the ROI on removing civil war statues and creating BLM artwork on city streets?

Please provide a link.

No mate I was not doing any ROI, stop trying to get a gotcha. Its pathetic. Get outside and touch grass.

Obviously everyone is thinking about costs with all the publicity and focus on DOGE.

Thanks for the admission.

What is the dollar value of truth?

Nice way to parse my response which is par for the course.

The rest of it was gibberish.

Personally, I think I’ll go with Department of Dumbasses for now.

I actually wouldn’t mind the name change, and for an earth shattering reason.

I thought Bill’s citing of 1984 was bang on.

Maybe if we called it the Department of War it would make us think twice before using it so much.

Probably not, but still…

Department of Undeclared Forever Wars

They’re synonymous when you think about it.

Nah bro. we will throw the entire US Air Force at it. That’s how it goes.

Keep DOD.

I like that one
