Missing Titanic Tourist Sub

Looks very bad for the five people missing in the sub that was touring the Titanic wreck site.

The more details I find, the more crazy the people who went on this appear.

The thing had no backup controls in case of digital failure.

They were bolted inside with no seats or seatbelts.

5 big dummies’ vying for one porthole.

There already exists ample unmanned drone footage.

Only half way down when communication lost?

I am quite pessimistic on any survival chances.

I would note that United States Navy submarines cannot go deep enough to search. Their crush depth is only at a fraction of the required depth.

I suspect that since this submarine was lost while still on the way down, it crushed due to a mechanical failure.

If that’s the case and if they recover the thing, I feel sorry for the person who has to clean the human soup out of the thing. It won’t be pretty.

This isn’t a Quecreek Mine rescue.

Send an unmanned drone down and see if you can find the remains. The surface weather there is always bad.

This is not going to end well, that is a given.

There has to be some video from before coms were lost.

I wouldn’t count on it. That submersible was put together slap dash from some clips I have seen and there didn’t appear to be much in the way of back up systems or emergency procedures. It sounded pretty bleak yesterday as I was listening to the commentary.

Let this be a lesson to all wanna be James Camerons in the world.

Don’t use ghetto construction techniques for your submersibles.

Spend the extra money and do it right.

Pretty sure buying stuff at Camper World is not the best way to go.

I am wondering if this vehicle had actually made a successful run before this failure.

The website information is evasive.

Even drones have a limited capability at such depths. Only a small number capable of operating that deep.

Apparently they did a successful dive in 2021 and 2022.

Here is a pretty good article.

That is a good article.

Experimental vessel and looks like this was the third dive.

Everyone knew the risks when they entered the submersible.

Cannot deny that if I had the disposable income I might be tempted to take a look at the Titanic.

If I was going to blow that kind of money on a ride, I think I would take the SpaceX Dragon Capsule to the ISS instead. Infinitely safer.

I dont think it has. I saw a reporter interview he went down in it and his trip had a malfunction and they had to return to the surface. I will link it to the post when i find it.

It wasn’t the night that the Titanic went down …

I believe that there have been several more than that, but only two have made it to the Titanic. The others had mechanical/electrical issues and had to abort before reaching the bottom.

Here is a sobering note:

“There’s backups of backups of backups. If it’s not at the surface, then only one of two things could have happened. Either it’s snagged on something like a big fishing net or even part of the Titanic, or there was a leak, in which case it would implode instantly and it’s over,” Pogue said.

“If you want to look optimistically at it, they lost power but they have three more days of air and they’re bobbing on the surface somewhere, and we just can’t find them because they don’t have power.”

“The hatch, by the way, is sealed with 17 bolts from the outside. So there’s no way to escape when you’re inside, to get out without a crew on the outside letting you out,” Pogue said.

This is a better view than anything you can get out the porthole of a submersible.

Pictures from the port do it enough justice for me. It was a behemoth in its day, but we have these now. Plenty of lifeboats too.
