Yeah when I read that this sub was navigated with a game controller?!! That wouldnt give me much reassurance.

Then to your second point about the hatch. To be enclosed without any way of escaping, you might as well be buried alive.

The Husky operator gets locked in from the outside as well. The cab is designed to detach from the frame of the vehicle in the event of a large enough IED. That way, there is a line of defense for an unconscious/wounded operator while help arrives to secure the area.

Of course but there is something to be said about actually visiting the wreckage. For a lot of people the more danger the more enjoyable the experience is.

Reports are aircraft using sonar have heard banging noises. I hope they are rescued but the cynic in me also thinks if they are rescued was this just some elaborate PR ploy.

Would a seatbelt be needed in a thing moving that slow?

When submerged seat belts would be of no use (particularly as there are no seats) but if they are bobbing around on the surface in rough seas, they could sure use them.

Just like an airliner there could be enough turbulence to toss them into each other and that fancy touch screen controlling the descent.

He said if it had an electrical or communications problem, it could have surfaced and remained floating, “waiting to be found” — bearing in mind the vessel can reportedly be unlocked from the outside only.

“Another scenario is the pressure hull was compromised — a leak,” he said in a statement. “Then the prognosis is not good.”

There are few vessels able to go to the depth to which the Titan might have traveled.

“The clock is ticking… going undersea is as, if not more, challenging than going into space from an engineering perspective,” said University of Adelaide associate professor Eric Fusil in a statement.

Deeper than one wave length of the swells on the surface in the deep ocean (which 12,500 feet is) there is almost no movement in the water other than the mass movement of the entire water column.

If they were floating wouldn’t they have a beacon of some sort?

There is a myriad of other sources that could rattle that sub. Debris, ice, netting, gas from floor, even a large fish or whale. Visibility is so poor at that depth they would have no chance to brace.

It would be interesting to see what kind of critters exist at that depth…

The more I read, the more of a villain Stockton Rush looks to be.

In 2018, Lochridge published a report that was critical of the company’s research and development efforts for the vessel, according to legal filings. He had “strongly encouraged that OceanGate utilize a classification agency, such as the American Bureau of Shipping, to inspect and certify the Titan.” OceanGate, however, turned down both requests.

Despite the concerns expressed by Lochridge, OceanGate declined to have the submersible independently inspected, a practice known as “classing” that is common in the industry. This procedure entails appointing a neutral group to guarantee that submersibles and other vessels adhere to high technical standards set by the entire industry. It is thought to be essential for making sure a vessel is fit for operation.

Classification could take years, according to OceanGate, who defended their choice by saying that it would be “anathema to rapid innovation.” The company stated, “While classing agencies are willing to pursue the certification of new and innovative designs and ideas, they often have a multi-year approval cycle due to a lack of pre-existing standards… Bringing an outside entity up to speed on every innovation before it is put into real-world testing is anathema to rapid innovation.”

Just the fact that this sub is named Titan is rather cryptic.
