Again…1979 was peak year. Factories and heavy industry was still employing people in my home state. At that time it leveled off. Yes there were union jobs available…but nepotism ran amok.
Immigrants are part of the cause …when it comes to decline in union participation.
Certainly not the main reason…
Remember this?
Ronald Reagan supported the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization (PATCO) during his 1980 presidential campaign. PATCO endorsed Reagan, who was previously the president of the Screen Actors Guild, and Reagan promised to support the union’s fight for better working conditions. However, after PATCO members went on strike in 1981, Reagan fired 11,345 of them, decertified their union, and prosecuted their leaders.
You don’t think that had an effect on unions following that betrayal?
It might have…but other things were in play that far outweighed anything that Reagan done.
Unions had to compete with Japan and Germany and they didn’t want to adopt.
Also Taiwan was becoming and industrial base/powerhouse.
In late 70’s Rockwell industry was going through a hard time because of competing industries from other countries…so when the union for second time in two year went on strike…they said ■■■■ it and sold off their small tool line to porter cable. They were some of best tools at the time…and then heavier tools like lathes table saws sander, bandsaw you name it moved to Taiwan to set up shop. Few years later it become what most people may know as Grizzly Industry.
Right. Why are you ignoring the collapse between 1978 and 1986
Yes. The current drops were much bigger no doubt. I don’t argue against reality but that initial drop should not be ignored. The chart completely supports my point as to when it started and supports your points to when it was at its worst. It also shows that the biggest drop was during a gop presidency.
Decline of small town industries started in late 70’s and early 80’s…that’s a fact.
Also I’m guess completion of interstate highway system hurt small town all over America.
Then you add best and brightest of young stock went on to college because of success of industrial era…people could offered to send their kids to college, first ones in their family to do so.
