Years ago 60 Minutes did a story about how much the youth wanted to associate with the West. So I have been expecting a uprising against Khamenei for a while. Perhaps this is it.
I think that a lot of older folks there remember how good they had it when the Shah was in power.
The shah was installed when a US-backed military coup removed the elected government in 1953. I doubt that most Iranians want another shah.
I was surprised when a colleague returned to Iran after many years in the US. I expected he would come back to the US, but he is still there after at least ten years. He appears to be doing fine based on his posts on Linked-In.
The narrative that Iran is a backward, oppressive hellhole appears to be overblown.
I was replying to the below. Would be great to see the regime in Iran over thrown and for a less repressive an much freer form of government emerge but we do not need to get involved.
I’d bet we have SOME sort of covert involvement, helping foment an internal uprising. By and large, though, I want to see it be as organic and internal as possible. The people there have to own it. Not the USA.
Headlines today say that the government is shutting things down and ordering police to clamp down on protests. Often that’s the best way to spur the natural human responses to resist even more. Look back on how it went in Poland.
