Man killed by Portland State police was Navy vet trying to break up fight, friends say

He was a postal worker. Three daughters.

"The officers have been identified as Officer Shawn McKenzie, who has been with the campus public safety office since 2002, and Officer James Dewey, who’s been there since 2014. Both became armed sworn officers in 2016. The school’s board of trustees voted to allow their campus officers to carry firearms two years earlier.

A witness also told Oregon Public Broadcasting that the man wasn’t fighting and was shot after a holstered handgun he was carrying fell onto the ground and he appeared to be trying to pick it up.

After the officers yelled that there was a gun, there was no apparent hesitation before the gunfire, the witness said."

Maybe there is more to it.

maybe libs can blame it on the man’s color.

Who are the hoplophobes again?

^ First post in the thread about race.

Umm… the fight was about racial slurs.

Uh… You immediately used that to blame a political party.

Damn.

Tragic. Don’t get involved in fights or domestic disputes, ever.

not when drinking and carrying a loose gun.

Yep…

That too. It’s always a recipe for disaster.

The police. Always have been.

In addition to the article, I can’t find anything that prohibits carry in bars in Oregon.

That he was in the Navy is irrelevant. Argumentum ad misericordiam.

[/quote]Well, at least this much of the story is completely false. At least one of the officers clearly and loudly yells, “drop the gun, drop the gun” twice.

The video doesn’t really make anything else clear but you can see one man dressed in black picking something up a few seconds prior to that hear the curb.

Too early to judge for sure either way but this may well prove not to be a justified shooting.

street brawl.
weapon on hip.
stay out of the fight.

First and foremost don’t go out drinking with a gun on your hip.

Alcohol and drugs make people stupid and stupid gets you killed.

Sober he’d have probably had the good sense to stay out of it.

This is an unfortunate story that has no lessons regarding the 2nd amendment. The only lesson is… don’t go drinking with a gun even if it’s legal.

I’ve tried convincing the moderators that crime and the 2nd Amendment have absolutely nothing to do with one another to no avail.

If it involves guns at all it ends up here.

That was my intent.
