On a related note, this remains my favorite thing about Brennan:
One explosive issue is a report by John Guandolo that broke last week on Tom Trento’s “TrentoVision Show” and also was carried by Glenn Beck on Feb. 11. The report stated that Mr. Brennan was converted to Islam while CIA station chief in Saudi Arabia from 1996 to ‘99. Let’s be clear: In America, a man’s religion can never be a condition to his holding a government position. It is protected by both the First Amendment and Article 6 of the Constitution. Therefore, even if it is true that he converted, Mr. Brennan’s religion should not be an issue.
However, according to Mr. Guandolo — a former SWAT team leader at the FBI, counterterrorism and Muslim Brotherhood specialist and Marine platoon commander — what should be an issue was the Saudis’ targeted recruitment of Mr. Brennan to the ideology of Islam while he was serving as the CIA station chief in Riyadh. This was not just a conversion but a political act by a foreign intelligence service.
No it wouldn’t, clearances are at their discretion, they can adjust them at their discretion. It’s not irrevocable and they can choose to read him in on anything they like if needed.
The president can call you into the Oval Office tomorrow and show you secret documents or approve those under him to do the same and nobody can do anything to stop him.
No one else can, though. Are you suggesting that any time an intelligence agency needs to get advice from a former head, the President should personally brief that former head?
Did Mr. Trump have legal authority to disclose the information?
Yes. The designation of information as a restricted national security secret is considered part of the president’s constitutional powers as commander in chief. Because the classified information system was not established and is not regulated by congressional statutes, Mr. Trump has the power to declassify or disclose anything he wants.
“The classification system is not based on a law,” said Steven Aftergood, a government secrecy specialist with the Federation of American Scientists. “It is an expression of presidential authority, and that means that the president and his designees decide what is classified, and they have the essentially unlimited authority to declassify at will. The president defines the terms of the security clearance system and the parameters that determine who may be given access to classified information.”
But we aren’t talking about the president asking Brennan to come in. We are talking about current employees of various intelligence agencies without the same authority to share classified information to whoever they want without clearances.
So they have to go through the president every time this is necessary? Seems like a stupid increase in bureacracy. Do you know how hard it is to get something in front of the president?
