Kari Lake to head "Voice of America"

It does but no one has answered what value does VOA provide for the US?

In all the discussions about china and russia over the last few years on this forum and others not once dod VOA come up as a critical tool in the fight against them.

No.

They’re still used, and they’re still illegal and unavailable to most.

If we stopped the stupid embargo on Cuba then Google App store and the likes would make their storefronts available in those countries.

I have that question too.

Maybe Lake will be chartered to work with DOGE to shut it down.

This news week sucks.

The same as RT.

how does VOA reach these alleged 350,000,000 people?

i never believe what i read when common sense says otherwise.

Google AI result.

VOA (Voice of America) reaches a large audience by broadcasting news and information in multiple languages across various platforms including radio, television, digital media, and social media, distributing content through affiliate stations worldwide, and utilizing satellite transmissions to reach areas with restricted access to free information; this allows them to connect with a vast global audience across different regions and languages.

I for one look forward to seeing VOA become something “important” again just because of the person in charge of it and the seething hate of her

Why will if become important? From what i have read there is a strict firewall between VOA and administrations.

How will its output change? From reading VOA articles over the past few weeks its just typical American news.

I admit I know very little about VOA and did not know it existed until Lakes appointment.

But I do not see any value it brings to American taxpayers and is nothing that other media outlets can do.

And yes if VOA had been a discussion a few years ago my opinion would be the same.

Its a cold war achronism which we need to end.

because of the pathological levels of hate over the people involved

it’s already led to scroll-length posts (ahem ^^) by people who “dont care one bit” and think “VOA is a lingering cold war relic of little importance”

No one is full of hate. I genuinely thought VOA no longer existed, once I started reading up on it, I started to wonder what was the point of it. Its a valid discussion seeing as everyone is focused on cutting government waste.

This has nothing to do with Lake but about what purpose VOA serves today.

i dont usually use these, but…

 < wipes tear >

good one.

Voice of America.
That brings warm memories…
I was small in the early 50s. My father was on the sofa with his ear to the radio.
We were listenning anxiously every evening …the voice of the translator by the name of Grga Zlatoper was coming in like from faaar away …in-end-out in volume…
The Anthem would play …if I remember it corectly, at the start and at the end of the program.
It was so touching I still get goose-bumps talking about it.
Now…thinking about it, Reagan was right when he coined the " Shining Lite On The Hill " for USA.

I am so happy that this Global news agency is still alive and delivering the message of hope from America.

You can’t imagine what that means.
It was Voice of America that I listened to with my father.
His biggest wish in life was to come and see America, this blessed place where streets are paved with gold.
I grew up with it and listened to it.
It was like sitting in a church and listening.
That voice from Washington and the Anthem that played was like something saintly and Holy coming over the air waves.

IT was that that motivated me to make the journey at the age of 17 and it took me 8 years to get here legaly.
When my father came first time to visit he kissed the ground and said he doesn’t mind dying now that his life-long dream came true.

God blessed this country, the ONLY place where the border is keeping people from pouring in, everywhere else border keeps people from getting OUT.
You were born here and take a lot of things for granted.
Go visit places, see how people live, only then you can see and feel how fortunate you are.

Propaganda…you say???
You don’t know how wrong you are.

Russians are experts at Propaganda.
So tell me…
How many people are jumping the border trying to enter Russia? Ten…twenty?
How about NONE.

They are deadly afraid of Trump.
Any little thing he does is a threat to them.
That’s the reason they have all the agencies and prosecutors on speed dial.

There are many who believe that was then and this is now. No longer a need, as everyone today is free to listen to what they want.

That isn’t remotely true. There are still many oppressed people who are only allowed to listen to government sanctioned propaganda. For them VOA is a beacon in the night.

How wrong am i? Voice of America is a propaganda channel. That’s not a bad thing. The post that you wrote to @Nemesis proves that really. Propaganda is a complex method of making you like something and even love it…

What do Russians have to do with it?

Russia has a huge migrant issue. :joy:. Kazakhs kirgiz and Uzbeks etc. the latest terror attack in Russia was executed by migrants in Russia.

I get that VOA has a lot of meaning for you and while it may have been necessary once, I am not convinced it is necessary today or what purpose it serves.

Is it American taxpayers responsibility to fund VOA to be a beacon of hope or provide news to the rest of the world?

Looking at VOA website I cannot see anything unique they are doing that is providing hope to the rest of the world. They have news programs, music shows, current affairs etc all content that can be accessed online via other providers or radio. Plenty of longwave radio stations that provide similar services.
