Just in: Disney+ lost 4M subscribers in Q2 2023 (on top of the 2.4M they lost in the 1st Quarter)

Last quarter (when the company lost only 2.4 million subscribers) the company blamed the loss on its decision to stop carrying Indian cricket league.

This quarter most of its loss was also in India. It is hard to know what is driving them away this time.

Yep Disney plus is an epic expensive failure. It’s effecting the Disney stock

Some think it’s wokeness :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

It’s amazing how people can project their dogma onto everyone with such ease.

I suspect wokeness . . .
but given interest rate cycles and the overall performance of streaming I can’t say that for sure.

It’s a 6.99 subscription with mediocre programming that concentrates on Marvel and star wars too much

I will gladly agree that wokeness reduced some subscriptions. I highly doubt it was in any large numbers

Most of the losses were in India, the particular service was something called Hotstar+.

I can only imagine if Disney’s activist “program your kids what to think” agenda has infected their programming there.

Here in the US, Disney gained subscribers to Hulu and ESPN+

Do you think they even broadcast it there?

I love Hulu btw.

It’s my cut the cord provider

Hulu has some great miniseries you can binge watch (sometimes with paid add-on)

  • Black Sails
  • Vikings
  • The Shield
  • Sons of Anarchy
  • Yellowstone

The shield was great

Sons of anarchy withered on the vine due to ridiculous violence that turned hilarious towards the end. It was a great show

I don’t do pirates or Vikings . Wife loves it though.

Pirates & Vikings are like a lot of series and miniseries
They start of pretty cool. They have a story to tell.
Eventually they run out of material (or inspiration.)

Watch the Netflix Norsemen. But i am not telling you anything other than it’s about Vikings.

Based on?

You do realize one can drive the other, correct?

Perhaps they are so ESG focused they forgot about quality?

Based on what the company is reporting

Poor basis.

Yes of course that’s possible.

What should it be?

So why isn’t there a cricket picture in the op?

I had a good Black Friday deal for Hulu and Disney+, but after Mandalorian s3 ended I put both on pause. It looks like I keep the rate after but that show was garbage as is most of the new Disney marvel Star Wars stuff. Star Wars Visions and Andor are the only things I liked lately.

It really was. But tragically, like The Americans, it was airing while GoT, Breaking Bad, and Madmen were all busily sucking the oxygen out of the room, and neither show got the recognition it deserved

Disney’s problem is a dearth of new content. Baby Yoda and nostalgia can only take you so far. I think that once they combine to a single app with Hulu, their numbers will come back up though.
